World Wide Web Building ResourcesCMC.net is running the Apache web server with several extensions. Below are some pointers to documentation that will let you get the most out of the web. HTML Resources on the WebAlthough there may be some basic HTML documentation here and there, you may also want to look some the free tutorials the the web has to offer such as Web Monkey. Another good introduction to HTML is available from http://www.htmlhelp.com. The definitive HTML reference is available from the World Wide Web Consortium, though it's a bit dense and is written for advanced users. And of course, like all things on the internet, there is a set of Frequently Asked Questions about the World Wide Web and writing HTML. Writing Your Own Web PageWith the above resources and some experimenting, you should be able to write your own web page. It's easier than most people think! Look at a sample web page that you can personalize. Requesting Web SpaceBefore writing your web page, you'll need to request web space on our server. 2MB of web space are available for no extra charge for internet or cable modem customers (sorry, no web space is available for email only customers). To activate your account, just send mail to webspace@cmc.net -- we'll take care of the rest. Uploading to CMCOnce you've written your web pages, you'll need to put a copy on our web server. You'll need what's called an FTP client to upload the files and you'll need to know where to put them. Web CountersPutting Counters on your web page is easy at CMC. You can see how many people visit your page. You can use either graphical counters, like the one on the left, or text counters embedded in you page. Anthony's IconsAnthony Thyssen has put together a collection of images that you can use on your web pages. Provided CGIAlthough we don't have a way for customers to provide their own Common Gateway Interface (CGI) programs, we do provide a few programs that should answer the needs of most of our customers with little effort on their part. Mailto is a CGI program that handles collecting data from an HTML form and mailing you a copy of its results. If you want to collect comments from visitors, survey results or any result from an HTML form in your web page, you should look at this program. It's simple to use and very flexible. We also have installed the Apache Server Side Includes module for you to use. For example: we don't update the last modified time listed on this page. The Web server does it for us, so you can always tell when this page gets changed, even if we forget to change the date. |
